Ontario's new housing bill strips municipal zoning powers

Bill 185 lets developers bypass local planning rules to fast-track housing. Supporters say it's necessary to hit 1.5M homes by 2031. Critics say it guts community input and will worsen infrastructure gaps.

Conservative
Cutting red tape is the only way to fix the housing crisis at scale. Municipalities have delayed development for decades.
Liberal / NDP
Removing community oversight hands power to developers with no accountability. Affordability isn't guaranteed.
Non-partisan
The tradeoff is real: speed vs. local democracy. Ontario needs both supply and accountability mechanisms.
